Botanical name:Pennisetum 'Eaton Canyon'

This grass will grow 2-3' tall and has red or bronze colored stems that are very slender and topped red/ purple whips.

Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo

Common name:Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo
Botanical name:Nandina domestica

Nandina domestica is a graceful upright shrub that grows from 3 to 6' in height. It gets its name from its bamboo-like growth habit. When thinned from the center it bears a remarkable resemblance to bamboo. It is best used in groups. It can be used in a shaded patio or out in a shrub border with full sun. An interesting feature of Heavenly Bamboo is the bronze color in the new growth when planted in full sun. It also bears clusters of white flowers in the spring.

Summer Lobelia

Botanical name:Lobelia erinus

This short ground cover has small green leaves with blue or red flowers that bloom in the summer and fall.

Japanese Maple

Common name:Japanese Maple
Botanical name:Acer palmatum

This magnificent plant can used as a small tree or shrub. It is deciduous with graceful leaves which have a scarlet color in spring as it leafs out. They turn orange or yellow in fall. It is slow growing to 20', and requires shelter from hot winds. The leaves of this tree are small, light green in color, and deply lobed. It should also be noted that the tree remains spectacular throughout all seasons. Second picture by Steve Mullany.

This perennial will grow less than 1' tall and has dark green leaves with flowers that come in a variety of colors and bloom in winter and spring.

Tree Aloe

Common name:Tree Aloe
Botanical name:Aloe ferox

Cape aloe forms dense 2-3' clump of muted green leaves borne on tall trunk eventually to 12'. Thick, wide fleshy leaves edged with prominent reddish-brown teeth. Dried leaves persist on plant & offer sunburn protection. Late winter, early spring 3' candelabra spikes intense orange red or even yellow tubular flowers. Full sun-part shade. Suffers in reflected heat in low desert. Distinguished from marlothii, flowers encircle the stem, marlothii are like a toothbrush. South African native.

Crimson Spot Rockrose

Botanical name:Cistus ladanifer

Crimson-spot rockrose. A mid-sized shrub to 6' with an equal spread and a compact habit. Leaves are 4" long, dark green above, lighter beneath, sticky and fragrant. Flowers are white, to 3" wide, with a dark maroon basal spot on each petal, and appear late spring and early summer. Adapted to periods of drought. Southwestern Europe to North Africa. - Native Sons Nursery

Bauer's Dracaena

Bauer's Dracaena grows to 10' high, and is topped with a 5' wide crown of burgundy leaves. In summer there are clusters of fragrant white flowers.

Quartz Creek Rush

Common name:Quartz Creek Rush
Botanical name:Juncus effusus pac. 'Quartz Creek'

This selection of a vibrant green reed is widely used in landscapes due to its carefree nature and rigid upright structure. This Juncus initially grows very rapidily and then slows to eventually clump to 36" wide. It will reach a height of approximately 24-36". Reguires fairly regular water in the warmer months to perform well. Requires wet soils and lots of water. Use only in high water areas.

Soils and Compost:

Maintain a two to four inch layer of mulch on the soil surface to reduce weeds, infiltrate rain water, and reduce compaction.
